Indiana’s Updated Sales Tax Filing System: What Retailers Need to Know

by Jennifer Dunn

The Indiana Department of Revenue (DOR) recently announced that they were changing their online sales tax filing and payment system.

Their new INTIME sales tax filing portal went live on September 8, 2020.

INTIME will replace the old INTax filing system. However taxpayers who prefer to use the old system can still file via INTax until the system is set to be retired on February 28, 2021.

If you are an Indiana sales tax filer, you should have received correspondence from the Indiana DOR regarding the steps you need to take to get set up with the newI INTIME system.

How to Sign Up with Indiana’s New Tax System

Though the old Indiana sales tax filing system won’t be retired until next year, we recommend going ahead and migrating over to the new system.

To sign up with INTIME if you are already signed up with INTax:

  1. Head to the INTIME website and click “View Registration Links”
  2. From that page, click “Create Username.”
  3. You’ll need the following items to register with INTIME:
    1. the Social Security Number (SSN) of the sole proprietor or the Federal Employer Identification Number (FEIN) of the business
    2. business name and address
  4. Click “Next” at the bottom right
  5. Proceed through the online system to create your new INTIME username.

Remember, once you are registered with INTIME you should use this system, and not the old INTax system, to file and pay sales tax returns.

How to File a Sales Tax Return with Indiana’s New Sales Tax Filing System

We contacted the Indiana DOR to find out if a change in their sales tax filing system also means a change in how retailers are supposed to file sales tax. And the good news was that the actual sales tax process filing process does not change!

While you will now login to file your Indiana sales tax returns a new address, the rest of the sales tax filing and payment process will remain the same.

What Else Retailers Need to Know about Indiana’s New Sales Tax System

INTIME stands for “Indiana Taxpayer Information Management Engine.”

Do you also file your individual (not business) income tax returns in Indiana? Then continue to use INTax for now. The Indiana DOR plans to add individual income tax filing functionality in Fall 2021.

In other words, businesses will need to pay corporate, sales and other businesses taxes on INTIME starting March 1, 2020 but that individuals will not need to start paying individual income tax on INTIME until after Fall 2021.
