How to File a Nevada Sales Tax Return

Nevada doesn’t make it easy to file sales tax returns, which is why we created TaxJar. What You’ll Need

In order to file your sales tax return, it’s important to gather a few key documents and pieces of information. 

Every state has specific requirements. Generally, we recommend:

  1. Your TaxJar Nevada Sales Tax Report
  2. Your Nevada sales and use tax account number
  3. Your state-assigned filing frequency
  4. Your Nevada electronic filing login details (ie: Your Nevada Tax Center username & password)
  5. Your bank account number and routing number that you’d like to use for sales tax payment

Note: In some states, you’ll need additional verification pieces like a Letter ID (ie: Hawaii), an identification number (ie: Kansas) a limited access code (in California), etc.  Be prepared to take a few extra steps to ensure your account is secure. 

Once you’ve gathered the items above, you’re ready to file your return.

Steps to manually filing a sales tax return in Nevada

  1. Open your TaxJar Report for NevadaView Sales Tax Report Button TaxJar
  2. Select the Record Filing button at the top of your reportRecord Filing Button TaxJar
  3. Use the links on the top right to locate the state’s filing website or download a paper form
  4. Copy the information from your TaxJar Nevada Report into the state’s website. View detailed instructions on using TaxJar Reports to file a return including a note on how to file when Marketplace Facilitator Tax collected
    • Visit the Nevada Tax Center and use your Nevada username and password to log inNevada Tax Center Login screen

      On the next screen click “Filings” then select your filing period.

      Be sure to answer the two questions by checking the “yes” or “no” boxes.

      Here choose a county or counties where you made sales. You can find the names of these counties and their numbers on your Nevada state report in TaxJar.

      One the next page, enter the “Total Sales” from your TaxJar Nevada state report into the “Total Sales” field on your Nevada sales tax filing.

      When you are finished entering your data, the totals  at the bottom of the screen on your Nevada sales tax filing should match the totals on your TaxJar Nevada state report. To check your data entry, check that “Total Sales,” “Exempt Sales,” “Taxable Sales,” and “Calculated Sales Tax” all match. If something seems off, check your data entry.

      The next page will be your detailed summary. If everything looks correct, check the checkbox at the bottom of the page and then click “Submit.”

      In the uncommon case that you have additional credits from (money due to you from the Nevada Department of Revenue) or liabilities (money you owe to the Nevada Department of Revenue), you can enter them here.

      Once your filing has submitted, note your confirmation number.  Now it’s time to make a payment. Click “Make a Payment” or “Schedule Payment” on this page. (Always make sure to pay by the return due date or you will generally still be considered late and will be subject to penalties.)

      On the next pages, you’ll enter your payment information, including bank name, account and routing numbers and address. Nevada requires that you pay via e-check. You’ll know you’re finished paying once you reach this confirmation page.

      After that, you’re all set and have successfully filed your Nevada sales tax return!
