TaxJar Release Notes: January 2018

by Jake Johnson

TaxJar Release Notes

Release Notes is our monthly guide covering product improvements across the board, from AutoFile to SmartCalcs. We’re improving TaxJar every day to make sales tax easy for merchants and developers. Take a look at everything we shipped in the month of January! 🎉

🛒 Squarespace Integration AutoFile Reports

Big news: TaxJar now integrates with Squarespace for automated sales tax reporting and filing! If you’re on the Commerce Advanced plan for Squarespace, you can begin importing your orders into TaxJar immediately. To get started, log in to your TaxJar account and click the “Connect to Squarespace” button on the Linked Accounts settings page:

In order to connect we’ll ask you for your Squarespace API key under Settings > Advanced > API Keys:

After saving your API key, we’ll download your Squarespace transactions and prepare your sales tax reports right away. Afterwards you can enroll in AutoFile to have your returns filed automatically by TaxJar. If you sell on other eCommerce channels or marketplaces, we can help you there too. Check out our entire list of sales tax integrations.

🍑 Georgia & Tennessee Report Improvements Reports

If you have nexus in Georgia, we’ve added support for TSPLOST (Transportation Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax), excess tax collected (if you’re over-collected sales tax), and improved the jurisdiction breakdown inside the state report:

As an origin-based state, merchants in the state of Tennessee have a single tax rate based on their location. Remote sellers have a couple options: Either to collect a flat rate for all Tennessee buyers or collect based on the destination. Starting in 2018, Tennessee recommends that remote sellers solely use destination-based sales tax collection.

In previous filing period before 2018, we’ve extended the TN report with non-food, food, and excess tax collected (if you over-collected sales tax). For filing periods in 2018 and onward, we’ll show a destination breakdown by jurisdiction and tax code:

☁️ Prior Years Import Changes Reports

Behind the scenes we’ve made some improvements to how we import your data from previous years. If you’re currently on a trial, you’ll need to update your billing information first to request a data backfill. Here’s the cost breakdown based on your transaction volume:

  • $25 per year for less than 1,000 transactions per month
  • $50 per year for 1,000 – 5,000 transactions per month
  • $100 per year for 5,000 – 10,000 transactions per month

If you have more than 10,000 transactions per month, you’ll need to contact us in advance to discuss pricing.
