Jennifer, thank you for this info! I just discovered this great site today. I am a TOTAL novice, small-quantity book seller (of self-published books).

Maybe you can point me in the right direction. I live in MO, and from what I can tell, I do NOT meet any of the required MO nexus, unless I do not understand what “Ownership of real or personal property” is?

Here is my deal. My wife is a self-published author and we sell her books mostly to a few bookstores within the state of MO.

Where I could really get some help regards the following:
    (1) When we go out of our state, how we navigate sales tax? Occasionally we will sell her books in OK, TX, CO, and KS at a small “book table” at a conference or church. This is what we don’t know how to navigate. I am not referring to online sales from MO and shipping to these states, I am referring to physically being present in a state for a weekend and want to sell via Square Register (app) in person. I looked briefly at the “remote seller” info, but once again wondered if it even applied to us because of lacking sales tax nexus, maybe it doesn’t, maybe it doesn’t, need help figuring that out 😉

    (2) We will eventually be looking to set up an online store and ship to various states (maybe if not too complicated).

    Thanks again!

  • Hi Matthew,

I just saw this! It sounds like you do have “home state nexus” in Missouri. Here’s more about that:

That said, I know this stuff is crazy confusing. A good start is our Sales Tax 101 for Online Sellers Guide:

And another great thing to do is visit our sales tax community on Facebook:

There are over 3k other sellers in the group in your boat, and some CPA’s who can answer specific questions, too. I hope this helps and good luck with your wife’s business! What does she write? I’m having some professional curiosity now. 🙂
