Pricing Changes Coming to TaxJar

by Mark Faggiano

TaxJar Logo 2015

When TaxJar launched back in June 2013 we set out to change the way eCommerce sellers dealt with sales tax. We never imagined that we would come so far so fast.

To our original vision of creating automated sales tax reports, we’ve added checks and balances to help you determine if you’re collecting the correct amount of sales tax, multiple shopping cart integrations to help more sellers, and AutoFile for when you have better things to do than file sales tax returns. And a whole lot more.

One thing that hasn’t changed at all is our pricing.

As we all know, the world of sales tax is complex. From our perspective at TaxJar, it takes a lot of moving parts to keep sales tax compliance simple for thousands of paying customers (and we’re adding more every day). For us, it was time to reevaluate how we price TaxJar.

We didn’t take this process lightly. We consulted with thousands of customers by survey and phone. We talked at length with them about the value TaxJar brings to their business and they helped us identify the fairest pricing structure in exchange for the peace of mind we provide. And by the way, we appreciate every single customer who took the time to tell us what they honestly thought.

After careful consideration, we’ve decided to implement the following pricing effective July 1, 2015 for all new TaxJar customers. (Current TaxJar customers won’t see the new pricing until January 1st, 2016 at the earliest.)

New TaxJar Pricing

Effective July 1st, 2015, TaxJar’s monthly pricing for all new customers will be:

TaxJar Monthly Pricing

All TaxJar customers who choose to purchase an annual subscription will still get a 10% discount. You’ll also get a chance to renew once more at your current plan level (if your plan expires before January 1st, 2016).

Current paying customers: You will be grandfathered in at your current rate until January 1, 2016. At that point you will automatically be switched over to the new pricing. (We’ll send an email reminder so it won’t come as a surprise.) The same rules apply for customers currently in their 30-day free trial.

We created TaxJar to help you eliminate the hassle of sales tax compliance. Nothing makes us happier than hearing our customers tell us that we’ve taken that burden off their shoulders. Thank you for making us a part of your business. We look forward to continuing to make sales tax simple for you, our customers.

Wow! Going to DOUBLE the price for us small businesses? Unfortunately looks like I’ll have to start keeping tack of taxes on my own. I only have 20-30 transactions a month, it was just simpler to pay $10 to have the reporting. Not worth $20, that’s for sure!

    • Hi Mike,

We definitely understand that you also have to make the decision that’s right for your business. We hope you keep in mind the grandfathering of our current paying customers:

“You will be grandfathered in at your current rate until January 1, 2016. At that point you will automatically be switched over to the new pricing. (We’ll send an email reminder so it won’t come as a surprise.)”

If you want the annual plan with 10% discount you can also get the current rates if you lock that in before July 1st. I hope these options help you with your sales tax management.

I want to voice in my opinion on this too. I am in the process of evaluating TaxJar for my small business, but this price change you have just announced is too steep for a small business. I could justify $120/year for this service, but now it doubles to $240/year. I might as well pay a book keeper for a few hours of service to do this tax prep for me as part of other bookkeeping work she already does.

Regardless of how you spin it, it is just ridiculous to double your prices overnight.

    • Hi Sudha,

Thanks for your feedback. We didn’t take this process lightly, and settled on this pricing structure after very careful evaluation.

That said, we totally understand that you also have to make the business decision that’s right for your business. Do keep in mind that new pricing for current customers doesn’t go into effect until January 1, 2016 and that you can get a 10% discount at your current rates if you enroll in the annual plan before July 1, 2015.

      Good luck with your business!

  • For the annual subscription, if we pass the 1000 transactions per month threshold, will we be charged extra in the middle of the year or will we just be held to the one-time fee that we paid at the beginning of the year?

    • Hi Brad,

Great question! You’ll be billed for the overage around the 4th of the month the month after the overage occurs. So yes, you’d be billed in the middle of the year.
