As eCommerce sellers, you know that there are few things that put a crimp in your style like sales tax. It can be so aggravating trying to figure out when to charge it, how much to charge, and then trying to figure out when to remit it back. An especially tricky aspect is whether to charge sales tax on things like shipping and handling. Let’s explore whether you will need to in the District of Columbia.
Is Shipping Taxable in Washington DC?
The District of Columbia Office of Tax and Revenue tells us this:
Boy, DC doesn’t really want you to find out whether to charge sales tax on shipping and handling. It isn’t listed anywhere on the website, but after a long wait for a customer service representative, we got to the bottom of it. If you have nexus in DC and are shipping goods to DC then shipping is taxable.
If you do happen to have nexus in DC (population approx. 700,000) then charge sales tax on shipping charges to your DC buyers.
