Where are the Amazon Fulfillment Centers?

by Mark Faggiano

Amazon warehouse locations FBA

Last updated July 23, 2016

Amazon does not publish comprehensive information about it’s fulfillment centers. But for sellers in Amazon’s Fulfillment by Amazon Program (FBA) this can mean a huge headache when it comes time to collect and remit sales tax.

Why? Because housing inventory in a state – including in an Amazon Fulfillment Center – gives a seller “sales tax nexus” in that state. (Need help with your Amazon FBA Sales tax? TaxJar has your back.) This means the seller is required to collect sales tax on all sales made to buyers in any state where they house inventory in an Amazon Fulfillment Center.

It’s vital for Amazon sellers to know where their products are stored!

Using independent research, news stories about new fulfillment centers, interviews with current FBA sellers, and even postings on Amazon’s job boards, TaxJar has come up with what we hope is a true and complete list of Amazon Fulfillment Centers in the United States and Canada. We will strive to keep this list updated as new fulfillment centers are built.

Please feel free to let us know in the comments if you see a mistake or can help us make a clarification with this list. Keep in mind that some Amazon facilities are sort centers or distribution centers (which do NOT create sales tax nexus.) You can find a list of Amazon sort centers here.

Locations of Amazon Fulfillment Centers

As Benjamin Franklin said there are only two things certain in life, those being death and taxes. While we all may disagree with it, these online taxes are going to become a reality, but surely the most efficient way for these taxes to be collected is, not from the millions of online sellers, but directly from the, relatively few, online payment companies that are processing the online transactions, eg. credit card companies, PayPal etc. Let’s face it, in this technological world we now live in, how easy would it be for these companies to process and calculate the relevant federal, state, county tax etc. on each transaction at time of of payment, based on the customer’s address, then consolidate and send electronic payments to the relevant tax collection agencies on a daily basis.

  • BSen

Thanks for this very informative post, Mark. Do you know which ones of these are regular Fulfillment Centers, and which of these are the recently announced ‘Sortation Centers”? From the company’s description, the latter are much smaller, and are used solely to sort packages by zip code en route from the FCs to customers.

  • http://www.brand5.com Mark Faggiano

What we’ve listed does not include sortation centers.

    • WarLord

Kent and Sumner are sortation centers. the only FC in Washington currently is Dupont.

How can I find out where my inventory is? Or do you simply recommend collecting sales tax in ANY state where Amazon has a fulfillment center?

    • http://www.taxjar.com/ TaxJar

Hi Kim, You can check where Amazon stores your items either by following the steps outlined in this post: http://taxjar.wpengine.com/amazon-fba-nexus/

Or by using a service like wherestock.com. I hope this helps!

      • L

Hey Mark – how often would you recommend using wherestock? Every month?

The process as I see it now is:
        Month 1:

        1) use wherestock to determine where you have nexus
        2) go to amazon.com and set up tax codes for those states
        3) go to taxjar and then set up autofile for those states

        Month 2 and beyond:
So what happens in month two and beyond? Would I/should I get a wherestock report again to determine where I have nexus? In case Amazon has moved my inventory around and/or I have received new inventory?

Or can I just leave things as is after the initial setup?

  • Michael

Are you guys sure that the Maryland warehouse at 2010 Broening Hwy, Baltimore, MD 21224, is BWI1 and not BWI2?

I know BWI1 at least in the past was the name of the warehouse in Sterling, VA, and it appears from sources like this one: https://www.linkedin.com/pub/matthew-ferguson/31/923/a7b that it continues to be.

Also, sources like this seem to indicate the 2010 Broening HWy warehouse in Baltimore is BWI2: http://wireless2.fcc.gov/UlsApp/UlsSearch/license.jsp?licKey=3635362.

  • http://www.taxjar.com/ TaxJar

Hi Michael, Thanks for the updates! No, we’re not sure, though we know Sterling is a data center and not a fulfillment center. My thought right now is that one of the BWI’s is the sortation center (which is open) and one is the Fulfillment Center (which should be opening any time now but isn’t open yet.) We’re looking into this based on that info you provided and will amend!

  • Sylvie

For Nevada, the one on North Virginia street is in Washoe County rather than Lyon County. The one in Fernley, Lyon County , has closed down.

  • Eric George

Can you tell us if Amazon has opened fulfillment centers in any inner-city neighborhoods?

  • A Stephen Rizzotto

You would think based on the first two paragraphs of your article, Amazon would post a list like this. Sometimes it seems they really don’t want us selling on their site.

    • Joseph S

They definitely do want all FBA sellers. It’s a big piece of the business and offers more selection to customers. You can see a list of all states here: http://www.amazonfulfillmentcareers.com/amazon-fulfillment/locations/. You’re welcome 😉

      • http://www.taxjar.com/ TaxJar

Just to be clear, the list on Amazon.com also includes Sort Centers, which don’t create sales tax nexus. Our list here on TaxJar only includes fulfillment centers that give Amazon sellers sales tax nexus and create conditions where they need to register for sales tax permits.

We have a separate list of sort centers (which don’t create nexus) here: http://blog.taxjar.com/amazon-sort-centers-locations/

  • http://www.taxjar.com/ TaxJar

    Hi Eric,

I can’t say for 100% sure but most of the time Amazon fulfillment centers are in industrial areas because they generally require ~1 million square feet of space plus tons of room for shipping bays, trucks, parking for workers, etc. I hope this helps!

    • Eric George

My concern is that the African-American sections of inner cities –especially places like Detroit and Chicago — have lots of space and lots of unemployed people. Amazon should consider its social responsibility and open distribution centers in inner-cities. Amazon’s low prices and convenience have taken a toll on retailers and their employees. Industries began leaving the inner-city over 35 years ago, jobs have been shipped overseas, unions have been busted. Hopelessness in inner-cities is probably more prevalent than decent paying jobs. Amazon should state its policy position on this issue. It should make a commitment to help.

amazon has an affiliate company that i worked at in Lenexa Kansas. Here is the Address: 11011 Lackman Rd, Lenexa, KS 66219

I am not sure of the site code such as: TUL1

  • http://www.taxjar.com/ TaxJar

    Hi There,

They actually closed that one back in February! But they may reopen another one.

    • Ryan

TUL1 is the only FC to close out of the ones
currently in Kansas. There are two warehouses for an affiliate company they own
called “Quidsi Logostics.” Also since December 2104 Amazon opened a new Sort
Facility called “MCI5.” Amazon currently is building “MCI1,” another
sort facility with an unknown completion date. Here is my source for warehouses
      in Kansas. They do exist!

How about Hawaii? I wouldn’t mind driving to another state if I were in the mainland, to a fulfillment center. Amazon receives a lot of business from this State, and it’s harder for businesses over here because shipping is expensive.

We have tried to comply and it has been nothing short of a major headache. If it was automated across the board that is one thing, but only 6 states are automated the rest are manual. I paid Windward Tax to set it all up and I guess they gave up and sent me a partial refund. So I have to ask an employee to learn how to file each month when sales tax collected was only $6. in some states. This whole situation is nuts. Either make it fully automatic collect & pay or forget about it.

FYI, there is *something* in Michigan now, located in Brownstown. There was a tech hub already here, and the MI “Amazon” tax just kicked in. (Though, the USPS tracking alternatively put it in Wyandotte, instead.) Not sure if this is a full size center or what.

edit: just a customer, so no inside info. However, as far as I can tell, I’ve only been taxed a couple times since the beginning of October out of many orders. Not sure why, but not complaining. 😉

      Hey there,

You’re right. Michigan is now requiring Amazon and other big retailers to charge sales tax (based on this law: http://taxjar.wpengine.com/michigan-sales-tax-nexus-law/).

There’s no fulfillment center there yet, but it is coming!

I heard my uncles neighbor say it was coming next year. That will make next day delivery easier! So excited to get my collectables faster. Thanks Amazon!

The Joliet, IL warehouse is open. I’ve already sent over 1,000 items there. It opened up about 45-60 days ago I think…

Is the Joliet center open? IF so, what is the code for it.

    • http://www.taxjar.com/ TaxJar

      Hi Tracy,

The fulfillment center isn’t open there yet. There is a distribution center open there, but no products are stored there (they’re all forwarded on to other warehouses) so Amazon isn’t creating nexus for FBA sellers in Illinois just yet. We’re keeping a close eye on the Joliet fulfillment center and will make a big announcement when it’s open.
