Where are the Amazon Fulfillment Centers?

by Mark Faggiano

Amazon Fulfillment Center States
Amazon does not publish comprehensive information about it’s fulfillment centers. But for sellers in Amazon’s Fulfillment by Amazon Program (FBA) this can mean a huge headache when it comes time to collect and remit sales tax.

Why? Because housing inventory in a state – including in an Amazon Fulfillment Center – gives a seller “sales tax nexus” in that state. (Need help with your Amazon FBA Sales tax? TaxJar has your back.) This means the seller is required to collect sales tax on all sales made to buyers in any state where they house inventory in an Amazon Fulfillment Center.

It’s vital for Amazon sellers to know where their products are stored!

Using independent research, news stories about new fulfillment centers, interviews with current FBA sellers, and even postings on Amazon’s job boards, TaxJar has come up with what we hope is a true and complete list of Amazon Fulfillment Centers in the United States and Canada. We will strive to keep this list updated as new fulfillment centers are built.

Please feel free to let us know in the comments if you see a mistake or can help us make a clarification with this list.

As Benjamin Franklin said there are only two things certain in life, those being death and taxes. While we all may disagree with it, these online taxes are going to become a reality, but surely the most efficient way for these taxes to be collected is, not from the millions of online sellers, but directly from the, relatively few, online payment companies that are processing the online transactions, eg. credit card companies, PayPal etc. Let’s face it, in this technological world we now live in, how easy would it be for these companies to process and calculate the relevant federal, state, county tax etc. on each transaction at time of of payment, based on the customer’s address, then consolidate and send electronic payments to the relevant tax collection agencies on a daily basis.

Thanks for the updates, Joe. These were super helpful!

  • http://www.brand5.com Mark Faggiano

What we’ve listed does not include sortation centers.

  • KimC

How can I find out where my inventory is? Or do you simply recommend collecting sales tax in ANY state where Amazon has a fulfillment center?

    • http://www.taxjar.com/ TaxJar

Hi Kim, You can check where Amazon stores your items either by following the steps outlined in this post: http://blog.taxjar.com/amazon-fba-nexus/

Or by using a service like wherestock.com. I hope this helps!

  • TomD

    Where is MDT1?

  • http://www.taxjar.com/ TaxJar

    Hi Will,

ATL6 is a sortation center, not a fulfillment center. There’s more about that here: http://blog.taxjar.com/amazon-sortation-centers-create-nexus/

  • http://www.taxjar.com/ TaxJar

    Thanks for the update!

    • WarLord

Also, as I just found out, there will be another FC (Fulfillment Center) in Kent as well, it’s currently finishing up building.

      • http://www.taxjar.com/ TaxJar

        Thanks for the heads up!

  • http://www.taxjar.com/ TaxJar

    Hi There,

This decision is ultimately up to you, but we do suggest checking either Wherestock or Amazon periodically to make sure you are in compliance. This would be a great question to ask on the Sales Tax for eCommerce Sellers Facebook group to find out how other FBAers do it: https://www.facebook.com/groups/SalesTax4EcommerceSellers/

  • http://www.taxjar.com/ TaxJar

Hi Michael, Thanks for the updates! No, we’re not sure, though we know Sterling is a data center and not a fulfillment center. My thought right now is that one of the BWI’s is the sortation center (which is open) and one is the Fulfillment Center (which should be opening any time now but isn’t open yet.) We’re looking into this based on that info you provided and will amend!

  • Sylvie

For Nevada, the one on North Virginia street is in Washoe County rather than Lyon County. The one in Fernley, Lyon County , has closed down.

    • http://www.taxjar.com/ TaxJar

      Thanks for the updates! Changed!

  • A Stephen Rizzotto

You would think based on the first two paragraphs of your article, Amazon would post a list like this. Sometimes it seems they really don’t want us selling on their site.

  • http://www.taxjar.com/ TaxJar

    Hi Eric,

I can’t say for 100% sure but most of the time Amazon fulfillment centers are in industrial areas because they generally require ~1 million square feet of space plus tons of room for shipping bays, trucks, parking for workers, etc. I hope this helps!

    • Eric George

My concern is that the African-American sections of inner cities –especially places like Detroit and Chicago — have lots of space and lots of unemployed people. Amazon should consider its social responsibility and open distribution centers in inner-cities. Amazon’s low prices and convenience have taken a toll on retailers and their employees. Industries began leaving the inner-city over 35 years ago, jobs have been shipped overseas, unions have been busted. Hopelessness in inner-cities is probably more prevalent than decent paying jobs. Amazon should state its policy position on this issue. It should make a commitment to help.

  • http://www.taxjar.com/ TaxJar

    Hi There,

They actually closed that one back in February! But they may reopen another one.

    • Ryan

TUL1 is the only FC to close out of the ones
currently in Kansas. There are two warehouses for an affiliate company they own
called “Quidsi Logostics.” Also since December 2104 Amazon opened a new Sort
Facility called “MCI5.” Amazon currently is building “MCI1,” another
sort facility with an unknown completion date. Here is my source for warehouses
      in Kansas. They do exist!

Thank you! Amazon owns Quidsi Logistics? That would be an interesting wrinkle for FBA sellers. And we have a separate post for Sortation Centers where the KS Sortation center is listed: http://blog.taxjar.com/amazon-sortation-centers-locations/

Thank you so much for the info!

Any rumors of Amazon opening a fulfillment center in Missouri?

    • http://www.taxjar.com/ TaxJar

HI Barbara, I haven’t heard of one in Missouri yet, but we do plan to do a blog post soon rounding up all the rumors. There are lots!

  • Monique Miriam

How about Hawaii? I wouldn’t mind driving to another state if I were in the mainland, to a fulfillment center. Amazon receives a lot of business from this State, and it’s harder for businesses over here because shipping is expensive.
